Editing – Shilo Music Video

Sunday August 31st we wrapped on production on the Shilo music video “Dodgin’ a Ford”.
Monday being the first day of post production, our editor, Thomas Johnson,  got busy and digitized all the footage.
Tuesday Tom broke up the footage into organized chunks.
Wednesday was our first editing session. I went over so we could sit down and start editing, when a “gremlin” decided to mess with the editing software Liquid. So we’re going to use Avid to edit instead which meant we needed to re-digitized the footage to a file type that Avid uses. Luckily when it digitized it, I watched all the footage and made notes on to what I want to use etc. So Tom and I got on the same page.
Thursday all was right with the world again, Tom got the footage to work in Avid, he was organizing the footage when I talked to him that night.
Friday Tom took a huge chunk of the morning to get a very loose edit done before his crew call on a feature film being shot in Indianapolis.
For Saturday & Sunday the plan was to work all weekend to get a rough cut. BUT the film Tom’s working on had some location issues and the re-shoots were scheduled for that weekend.
Monday Tom wanted the night to get more of loose edit together before I came in which meant I was able to go to the Indy Writers’ Group meeting.
Tuesday Tom and I got together to edit. Normally the second Tuesday of the month is reserved for the Indiana Filmmaker’s Network meeting of which Tom and I are board members of but that night we needed to make some headway on the video.  That night we got 1/3 of the video done. I’m super happy with how it’s coming together!
Wednesday Tom locked himself in his editing suite and hammered out the rest of the video minus the last verse.
Thursday I came in preparing to burn the midnight oil. We decided we’re weren’t leaving the editing suite we had a rough cut we were happy to present. At 2:30am we had completed a real solid rough cut. The car chase stuff is great, Alicia is so cute and beautiful, “Jim” is perfect and the band looks freakin’ awesome!
On Friday we presented the rough cut to the band and the band’s management.
Still to do is: color timing, cross fades and slight fine tuning.
But for now the video is out of my hands for a few weeks.
More updates as they develop
Much Love,
Kate Chaplin

It’s a Wrap on the Shilo Music Video!

Kate Chaplin, along with her amazing crew, wrapped production in Lizton, Indiana on Sunday for Shilo’s music video “Dodgin’ A Ford.”

“The Shilo shoot was so energizing for me,” says Chaplin, “which is weird to say after how much LOSS and First They Came For drained me…. but the crew, cast and the band were so awesome! I had a blast. I really dug working with everyone and can’t wait to do it again!”

Chaplin’s last music video was a Latin video for Detroit’s award-winning Benny Cruz Y La Buena Vida that showed on MTV in the late 90’s. Since that time Chaplin has been working on short films. “It was nice to come back to my roots. I started as a teenager writing and making little music videos with my friends. At the end of the weekend in Lizton, I was sunburnt to a crisp, my feet were killing me and my jaw hurt from smiling and laughing so much. It was a great weekend.”

Kate served as director/producer for the video her crew included:
Director of Photography – Nate Savidge
Assistant Director – Lynn Budreau
Editor/Grip/Gaffer – Tom Johnson
Stunt Driver – Jim Dougherty
Picture Vehicle – Matt & Bryan Janes
Playback/PA – Chuck Budreau
Still Photo – Polina Osherov
Costuming – Jaimie Rae

Her capable cast was:
Alicia Hedlund – “girl”
Chris Breidinger – “Jim”
Jen – cashier
Kimsey – Hank hottie
Kimberly – Hank hottie
Jenna – hottie

And it wouldn’t have been possible without the best band in country music – Shilo:
Bryan Brager – Lead Singer
Travis Gow – Fiddler
Mike Stoner – Lead Guitar
Randy Blankenship – Bass
Doug Chopson Jr – Drums

Kate would like to send a special thanks to Frank Milstead at Deep South Promotions, Chris Hedlund, Stacey Williams, the folks at Cow Pokes, Tina Smith, Jen at Topeka Pharamacy and Lexapro!

Music Video

Spent the weekend location scouting for a music video. Looking for a place to double as a 5 &10 and also a neat place for a car chase.

Richard recommended this great place in Topeka. The Topeka Pharmacy is under construction right now, don’t know if it will be done before the shoot but this place is very cute, great interior too. High racks so some of the “girl looks over the racks towards the guy” would have to be reworked. The columns out front might be a bit of a trick to shoot around but we can cheat it for reverse POV shots. There is a pizza place across the street, great for cast/crew lunches (hint, hint LOL). Also right across the street from the town Marshall.

Also on the trip was Goshen. This is the Olympia Candy Kitchen. It’s an adorable soda fountain and candy shop. It was closed (as was everything) but I took a picture through the window to see the red stools at the soda counter opposite all the little bins of candy. Small but so cute. The exterior is very colorful. I know camera wise, red is not the best color to film as it can sometimes “bleed” so that is a consideration with this location as the 5 & 10. I know it’s not a real 5 &10 but it could work.

Also in Goshen was this True Value Hardware store. Right across from the Goshen Theater is this typical small town, main street hardware store. Couldn’t see the inside too well but it’s packed with stuff. Cute exterior, no obstructions. I worry about the window glare a bit because there is no awning, so time of day that we shoot at will be a factor.

This is the city of South Whitley. I loved the grain silos all together and surrounded by gravel roads. These were great locations for the car case to be. The reason I like the gravel and kicking up dirt is because it makes the trucks look like they are going faster than they really are. Having them come around the corner of these entrances and exits of the silos will look very Dukes of Hazard.

South Whitley also had an antique store that might pass as a 5 &10. I like the exterior a lot. Couldn’t see the interior all that well with it being closed.
